Meet The Stylist Behind Ice Spice’s Distinctly New York Looks

Like most people born and raised in New York, Ice Spice doesn’t let us forget it. But she’s not loud about it. You just know based on the music she makes, the way she speaks, and most importantly, what she wears.

Most of us met the 23-year-old rapper via her “Munch (Feelin’ You)” music video. She stood out for her red curls and her understated but sexy outfit that felt very New York (name plate necklace, denim cut-offs, cotton tube top, and white Nike AF1s). But as the song and her persona gained steam, we started to see her wardrobe level up, but still maintain a very New York aesthetic. In the music video “In Ha Mood,” she leaned all the way in, wearing True Religion jeans, two B.B. Simon belts, Jordan 4s, and a white tank top that revealed her red bra. A Twitter user tweeted: “Ice Spice needs a stylist bro, wtf is this??” and she aptly responded: “U wouldn’t get it.”

Since then, Ice Spice has been on a whirlwind of a press run, attending New York Fashion Week and wearing looks from Dion Lee, Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, LaQuan Smith, and Tia Adeola, while still looking completely herself. That’s thanks to Marissa Pelly, who’s been styling Ice Spice for the past couple of weeks.

“I never wanna be the type of stylist that tells someone what to do or tells someone how they should be,” says Pelly. “I think that it’s most fulfilling and most honest and authentic when it’s a collaboration.”

Meet the Ukrainian Designers Bringing Resourcefulness and Optimism to London Fashion Week

On the final morning of London Fashion Week, a trio of Ukrainian designers showed their latest collections in the Newgen runway space of the Old Selfridges Hotel: thousands of miles away from their hometowns and studios, and even further away from where they likely imagined they would be 12 months ago. (February 24 marks one year since Russia first announced the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that continues to this day.) 

An initiative spearheaded by the organizers of Ukrainian Fashion Week and supported by the British Fashion Council, the significance of its timing didn’t go unnoticed. “It’s very important for us to show that one year on, we have not been manipulated by the war,” said Ivan Frolov of the brand Frolov, known for its corsets, crystals, and camp; all of which were very much present on this week’s runway. “We are so strong that, even under these terrible circumstances, the DNA of our brands hasn’t changed.”

While it would have been impossible to stage the show in Ukraine under the current circumstances, the majority of the fashion community there—even those who have relocated abroad temporarily—still have their studios, pay taxes, produce, and perhaps most importantly of all, have friends, family, and supporters still in their homeland. The showcase proved that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, the designers’ spirits have yet to be dampened. “I’d be working in my studio and I’d hear rockets flying, or we’d have to run to the bomb shelter,” said Julia Paskal of Paskal, with a shrug. “But that’s just our lives now.”

Sustainable Outfit Ideas for Fashion Week Season

Fashion month is in full swing and while the concept of fashion weeks can sometimes result in increased consumption, there are plenty of emerging designers doing things differently and working to promote a more circular and sustainable world. As a result, those of us who attend fashion week have the opportunity to do the same thing and it turns out, it’s easier than you might think.

This season, we challenged ourselves to opt for pre-loved fits over popular trends and styled a number of sustainable looks through renting, borrowing and shopping secondhand with Depop. Increasingly, the pre-loved platform is finding itself at the center of fashion week, with emerging creatives and sellers like johnsvintagefazedbyfinn and breadandbuttercollection curating vintage fashion and streetwear selections purely for the purpose of fashion week dressing.

The first of our LFW looks began with a borrowed Feng Chen Wang blazer and silver necklace, worn alongside charity shop cargo pants. Indonesia’s largest annual fashion event, Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW), is marking its 10th year with a focus on the traditional textiles and culture of Gorontalo.

Organized by the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs (APPMI),

IFW 2023 is being held from Wednesday to Sunday at the Jakarta Convention Center.

Approximately 200 designers will unveil their creations at the five-day event, along with 400 exhibitors presenting locally made products, ranging from apparel and accessories to culinary delights.

IFW 2023’s opening ceremony on Wednesday, which featured a traditional Betawi dance routine and a performance by musicians Maria Calista and Kezia, was supported by the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry and the DKI Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency.

In addition, the ceremony also involved a musical performance by violinist Iskandar Widjaja and pianist Michael Anthony, alongside dancer Syandria.

Tickets to IFW 2023 can be purchased on Tokopedia, the event’s official e-commerce and ticketing partner. Tokopedia is also offering a livestreaming service for those unable to attend in person.

APPMI chairwoman and IFW president Poppy Dharsono said that in its 10th year, IFW had positioned itself as a platform for designers to collaborate with their respective provincial handicrafts council (Dekranasda) so as to gain insight, knowledge and market share.

“This year, we have been trusted by the province of Gorontalo to highlight their designers’ works so as to promote Gorontalo-made products on a national stage,” she said.

Milan Fashion Week’s September Edition Packed With Debut Shows

MILAN — September’s Milan Fashion Week, running from Sept. 20 to Sept. 26, is poised to be a packed affair, with 67 mostly physical shows, highly anticipated debuts and a bunch of returning designer brands.

Among the creatives presenting their first collections for storied houses is Marco de Vincenzo, the newly named creative-director-1235188450/” data-ylk=”slk:creative director at Etro” class=”link “creative director at Etro, who will make his debut at the helm of the storied Italian brand. For it, he picked a location on the outskirts of the city for the Sept. 23 event, which takes place a few hours after Filippo Grazioli’s revamped vision for Missoni. This will mark Grazioli’s first catwalk since joining the brand as creative director in March. He was already responsible for the resort and men’s spring collections unveiled via presentations earlier this summer.

The following day, Sept. 24, a couple of additional eagerly awaited debuts are taking place: Salvatore Ferragamo, which showed via a presentation last season as it prepared a change of creative guard, is back with a coed show designed by newly installed creative director Maximilian Davis, while Bally, which had traditionally hosted presentations, is making its debut on the runway with the first collection designed by fashion-features/new-bally-creative-director-will-bring-la-view-of-switzerland-1235041414/” data-ylk=”slk:Rhuigi Villaseñor” class=”link “Rhuigi Villaseñor, the Manila-born designer behind the Rhude brand.

Moncler will cap off that day celebrating its 70th anniversary with a runway event at 9 p.m. CET.

Showing off-schedule on Sept. 25 at its Milan flagship store on Corso Buenos Aires, Benetton will parade the first collection designed by newly appointed creative director Andrea Incontri.

According to the provisional calendar issued Friday by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the week officially kicks off on Sept.

Matty Bovan Is Taking His Avant-garde Maximalism to Milan Fashion Week

LONDON — Matty Bovan is joining the Milan Fashion Week schedule.

The Yorkshire-based designer will be showing his spring 2023 collection on the official calendar with support from Dolce & Gabbana, which is supplying Bovan with fabrics and materials.

Bovan graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2015 with an MA in fashion knitwear. Their graduate collection opened the final show at the fashion university that earned Bovan the L’Oréal Professionel Creative Award, followed by the prestigious LVMH Graduate Prize, which includes 10,000 euros and a junior designer placement at Louis Vuitton under Nicolas Ghesquière.

“Craft and handiwork are at the heart of my work, something that myself and this iconic maison have great affinity with; the synergy upon meeting Domenico and Stefano recently was palpable,” Bovan said in a statement, adding that they’re “still processing the idea that I am going to be exploring their archives and mixing their historic work with my new output for next spring. I’m already feeling the turbo charge of this alliance.”

Bovan’s avant-garde maximalist approach to design has secured them deals with the likes of Coach, working on a range of accessories projects since 2016; collaborating with Miu Miu on a series of dressed up mannequins, and a series of limited edition Barbie dolls dressed in their garments.

Fall 2022 was Bovan’s biggest collection to date, titled Cyclone, which they described as “chaos and destruction — even beauty — in the wake of its power.” Model Irina Shayk opened Bovan’s show in a repurposed Roksanda Ilincic voluminous gown.

Since their fashion week debut with creative hub Fashion East in 2017, Bovan has gone on to staging solo shows during London Fashion Week that have led to their designs being bought by Matchesfashion and Milan’s No30.

‘The hard work is never over’

Three years before “manifesting” became the new wellness craze in late 2020, Aaron Rose Philip tweeted that when she was finally signed to a modeling agency, it was going to be “OVER for y’all.” And she was right.

Philip, a transgender Antiguan American model who was born with cerebral palsy, has published a book, been profiled by the New York Times and Vogue, was interviewed by her idol Naomi Campbell, starred in multiple high-profile fashion editorials, served as grand marshal for New York City’s 2021 Pride Parade and performed in a Miley Cyrus music video — all before she turned 21.

So, yes, it was over for all of us the second she decided to pursue the fashion industry when she was a junior in high school.

“I am someone who has lived 50 lives in 21 years,” she told In The Know. “I for sure use fashion as an outlet for my own personal happiness and self-expression.”

Philip is now managed by Community New York and Milk Management London and has modeled for almost five years now. But as she continues adding to her already impressive résumé, she is still waiting to see disability be made an equal part of the conversation surrounding the need for more diversity within fashion and beauty.

“I’ve had so many opportunities [in which] the client may revert on their decision to cast me or the job ‘just doesn’t work out’ in general due to them not being able to accommodate my disability,” Philip explained.

Who Made September 2022 Conscious Fashion Campaign Honoree A-List

This September, the new A-list are those aligned with a conscious fashion collective.

The Conscious Fashion Campaign is put on by the Fashion Impact Fund, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships and the PVBLIC Foundation. Announced Monday, the new cohort of honorees are being paraded this September for New York Fashion Week.

Judges included media (including WWD’s own executive editor Tara Donaldson) and other fashion industry veterans. The ethical fashion honorees span innovators in fields like mycelium, as well as social justice entrepreneurs, activists and brand builders.

In an interview with WWD, Kerry Bannigan, media aficionado and executive director of the Fashion Impact Fund, said the overarching premise behind the Conscious Fashion Campaign (an initiative of the Fashion Impact Fund) recognition is to point the finger back to the ways women are carrying sustainable fashion forward.

Bannigan said these honorees are “so focused on their mission at hand” that resources for marketing and other expenses are rarely considered. Efforts like the Conscious Fashion Campaign shed a light on the “importance of this work,” validating their achievements.

The inaugural media campaign in February drummed up 1,700 digital billboard plays reaching over 512,000 people. This next edition will run Sept.
