An engagement ring represents a lifelong commitment — to your partner and to a piece of jewelry you’ll wear for the rest of your life together. Having a sense of the trends that do arise can help you decide which ring might be right for you.

We consulted with Kristina Buckley, Managing Director of the Natural Diamond Council, the industry authority and resource on natural diamonds, to get a read on what’s trending in the world of engagement rings for 2023. The recurring theme that kept popping up? Uniqueness and rule-breaking. There’s not one dominant trend in engagement rings these days, because everyone seems to want a ring that’s unique, personal to them, and reflective of their individual style and values.

That means a lot of the old rules are out the window. Three months salary as a standard budget? Nope, set whatever budget feels right to you. Grading diamonds on a traditional scale? Nah, imperfections can be part of the draw. “We always suggest looking ‘beyond the 4 Cs,’ says Buckley, referring to cut, color, clarity, and carats. “Once you fall in love with a stone, any inclusions or color grading it may have on paper doesn’t matter.” Wearing your ring on your left ring finger? Not necessary if you’d prefer somewhere else. You get the gist: Anything goes!

The best modern engagement rings

Ideally you’ll have just one shot at this — either picking out an engagement ring for your beloved or, best-case scenario, having the lovely task of choosing one for yourself. But you don’t have to go for a single brilliant-cut solitaire diamond in a traditional claw setting. The four Cs — cut, carat, colour and clarity — are important, but so is choosing something that fits with your personal aesthetic. And the exciting news is that there is a cohort of young designers (as well as some more familiar brands) creating rings that are original, colourful, design-led and different.

Kate Bosworth’s Diamond Ring Fuels Engagement Rumors

Over a year into their relationship, Kate Bosworth and Justin Long officially made their red carpet debut at the Vanity Fair Oscars party on March 12. Wearing a chic plunging gown by Monique Lhuillier, the “Blue Crush” actor smiled for the cameras with her hand on Long’s chest, offering a view of her massive diamond ring. Though reps for the actors have not confirmed their engagement, it sure looks like the couple is headed toward the aisle.

On March 15, Bosworth seemed to reference the news on Instagram alongside film photos from the Oscars afterparty. Among a list of credits that included Long and her glam team for bringing her beautiful look to life, she thanked her nail artist Ashlie Johnson for her “most important manicure to date.” Johnson also referenced Bosworth’s “new bling” in a post of her own, further hinting at an engagement.

Bosworth’s ring appears to be a classic, round-cut diamond set on a thin silver band. The sparkler is estimated to be about 10 carats and valued at $500,000, according to diamond expert Mike Fried, CEO of The Diamond Pro. “A diamond of this size is incredibly rare,” he told POPSUGAR. Bosworth has yet to share a close-up of the round-cut diamond, known as a traditional shape that never goes out of style.

The new accessory complemented Bosworth’s regal gown, which featured a black velvet corset and a floor-length pale pink skirt from the designer’s fall 2023 collection. Coincidentally, Lhuillier is known for her exquisite bridal wear, so perhaps the two are subtly offering a hint at a collaboration in the future. Styled by Samantha McMillen, Bosworth finished the minimalist look with Cicada jewels, including a ring on her right hand and diamond earrings.

Everything We Know About Rebel Wilson’s New Tiffany & Co. Engagement Ring

According to Luker, the engagement ring “appears to be set in platinum.” She also noted that Agruma chose a traditional style for Wilson, adding, “A round center solitaire diamond with a high polished platinum band from Tiffany & Co. is classic and timeless!”

2. How Big Is the Diamond?

The jewelry expert estimated that the center diamond is around 2.55 carats. “Celebrities including Mila Kunis, Emily Blunt and Natalie Portman also wear round center diamond engagement rings set in platinum,” Luker added.

3. How Much Did the Engagement Ring Cost?

While the exact cost depends on the quality of the diamond, Luker offered an estimate. She said, “I estimate this design with a high quality 2.55 carat diamond costs around $70,000.”

4. When Did Rebel Wilson Get Engaged?

In February 2023, Wilson announced on Instagram that she’s engaged to Agruma. The Pitch Perfect star shared a slideshow of photos that were taken in front of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.

“We said YES!” Wilson wrote in her caption, with two pink heart emojis. “Thank you @tiffanyandco for the stunning ring and to Bob Iger and the incredible team at Disneyland @disneyweddings for pulling off this magical surprise!”
