As royal enthusiasts, we love looking at throwback photos of the British royal family. And in the spirit of taking a (royal) trip down memory lane, we stumbled upon the striking pictures taken of Kate Middleton and Prince William on the day they announced their engagement to the world in November 2010.

In case you need a refresher: Clarence House confirmed William and Princess Catherine’s engagement on November 16, 2010. At the time, the royal residence shared in a statement that the couple, who met while attending St. Andrews University in 2001, would get married the following year.

Before they sat down for their first-ever joint interview as a newly engaged couple, Prince William and his soon-to-be wife posed for a series of photos in the State Apartments of St. James Palace.

The striking portrait below (taken by royal photographer Chris Jackson) shows the pair beaming at each other.

For the memorable occasion, Princess Catherine was rocking a dark blue wrap dress by Issa, which she paired with black pumps and minimal jewelry. Meanwhile, Prince William was wearing a navy blue suit with a blue/purple tie and black loafers.

As seen below, the Prince of Wales stands with his hands clasped while Catherine drapes her hand through his arm—a nearly identical pose to Princess Diana’s engagement picture with King Charles.

Lastly, the bride-to-be offered a close-up glimpse of her stunning engagement ring. In the striking photo below, Catherine’s blue sapphire and diamond engagement is on display.

Fun fact: The 12-carat Ceylon sapphire belonged to the late Princess Diana. And in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex addressed false rumors about the engagement ring.

In the book, Prince Harry debunked reports that he gifted the ring to Prince William. In fact, the Prince of Wales had the ring in his possession all along. “He’d asked for it after Mummy died, and I’d been more than happy to let it go,” Harry explained.

Prince William and Princess Catherine tied the knot on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London. Fast forward to the present: The couple share three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.
